Most people recognize that LinkedIn is a great tool for job seekers, but it’s also important to keep your profile up-to-date even when you aren’t actively looking for a new gig. The LinkedIn platform has over 500 million users so you never know when a prospective employer, networking contact or even your current boss might check out your information on the site.
I suggest that everyone does a profile check and update about 3-4 times a year, whether or not they are looking for a job or consider themselves a heavy networker. Here are three quick updates to make.
- PROFILE UPDATE: Make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated with your current job and title. For consistency, pull out your paper resume and make sure the all the job titles and dates of employment match. It usually make sense to list your full work history in both places. And if this check reveals that your paper resume isn’t up-to-date, it is time to edit that too.
- EXPAND NETWORK: Take a few minutes to think about whether you’ve made new professional contacts over the last few months that you can add to your LinkedIn network. Send out a few quick invitations via the site. Even if you have their email addresses, being connected via LinkedIn provides networking value.
- ENDORSEMENTS: Think about whether you have 1-2 contacts in your LinkedIn network whom you can “endorse” on the site. If someone has asked you for a LinkedIn recommendation, take a few minutes to write one for them and post it.
